The Center for Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, the Department of Entomology, the Department of Biology and the College of Agriculture at the University of Kentucky are proud to announce a one day symposium on Invasion Biology on 27 October 2008 (from 10 am to 5 pm), at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. This is intended to be the first meeting of an annual Fall Invasion Biology symposium. This first symposium will focus on the organismal ecology and evolution of invasive species. The schedule of talks, and other events (lunch, round table discussion, social), is appended at the bottom of this message and available at www.uky.edu/~cfox/CEEB/CEEB_InvasionBiology.html.
Note that there are two different invasive species symposia being held this Fall semester at UK. The focus of this first symposium will be on the organismal ecology and evolution of invasive species (e.g., who invades, why they invade, time-lags in invasion, the role of plasticity in invasion, how biotic interactions affect invasion, and adaptation to and by invasive species). The second symposium, being held December 12-13, is on management issues of direct relevance to Kentucky (see www.ca.uky.edu/invasives for details). Other topics, such as management of invasive species or ecosystem consequences of invasion, will be the topic of future symposiums.
The October 27 symposium is FREE and open to anyone who wishes to attend, including both the UK and non-UK community. Lunch will be provided free of charge to all participants thanks to the support of our UK sponsors, including the Department of Entomology, the Department of Biology, the Tracy Farmer Center for the Environment, the College of Agriculture at UK, and T.H.E. Engineers.
There is no registration, but please RSVP to fox@uky.edu so that we know how many people to expect for lunch.
For further information please contact Chuck Fox at fox@uky.edu, 859-257-7474.
Please post this advertisement and circulate it to appropriate listservs and students/faculty at surrounding colleges.
